Woman 8 Weeks Pregnant With Human Clone???
According to an English newspaper in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dr. Severino Antinori’s quest to bring the world’s first human clone to birth is well underway. The news report quotes Antinori claiming that one woman in his experiments is eight weeks pregnant. Although Antinori was not quoted as specifically saying the woman is pregnant with a cloned embryo, he does say she is pregnant as a result of participating in Antinori’s reproductive cloning program. He made his announcement during a speech to a conference on genetic engineering and cloning in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
During the conference’s question and answer session, Antinori admitted that he is exposing the woman and clone to incomprehensible risks. The article says, “He [Antinori} stressed that they have reduced the risk of deformation in cloning before transplanting the embryo into the womb. ‘I concede the risk but you have to be careful,’ he admitted.”
This development proves that some scientists will stop at nothing–even risking the lives of mother and child–to make history. Allowing “therapeutic” cloning would only provide a foil for renegade scientists to obtain the embryos they need to run experiments they already want to do.
It is urgent that Congress to pass a comprehensive ban on human cloning to prevent such atrocities from happening in the United States. Such a ban would encourage other countries to follow suit and push the United Nations to take a more proactive role in securing a global ban.
