Reaction from Religious Freedom Coalition to Advanced Cell Technology’s Human Cloning Announcement of November 25, 2001

November 27, 2001

The very disturbing announcement by Michael West of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT) stating that his company has successfully cloned a human embryo left many in shock.  We have been sliding down this slippery slope at a rapid pace ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned five years ago.

We commend the U.S. House of Representatives for facing this very difficult and moral issue head on and doing the right thing by passing the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001.  Likewise, we urge the Senate to stop ignoring the issue; take up the House passed version and pass a total ban on cloning.

President Bush has been very clear on his position on the creation of human beings for research purposes.  He has unequivocally stated that cloning embryos is unethical.  The majority of Americans agree that it is wrong to create a human being for the purpose of killing it.

“The United States Senate needs to recognize the sleazy rhetoric that ACT is using to cover up their ultimate goal— to clone human beings solely for the purpose to destroy them so their body parts can be used for the benefit of others.” stated Bill Murray, Chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition.  The Senate should take immediate action and bring HR 2505 before the full Senate for a vote.

The Religious Freedom Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of religious freedom in the United States as envisioned by the authors of the Constitution.
